Read a letter from Geraldine's Mom to JHC
See an update on Gerri's situation Return to Picture Gallery Because the surgery in question does not work very well on older children, doctors prefer to operate on younger patients as young as 1 month, rather than wait for them to be in heart failure.
Geraldine will need a two-step surgery. The first one is called Pulmonary Artery Banding and this is a closed heart operation. Because she has valve regurgitation (not a good sign for her defect) and is showing signs of mild ventricular dysfunction, all the surgeons we talked to recommend that we do the PA banding as soon as possible. This was how one doctor described it: "while I would not characterize the banding as an emergency, delaying it is detrimental."
