Mack Mahoney Defines Persistence-
Rebuilding After Tragedy, Creating a Legacy

Commentary by Renee McCormick

This is the most recent Jesica's House
Calvin Coolidge - 13th President once said, "Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; un-rewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent."
No one defines persistence like Mack Mahoney, a homebuilder from Louisburg. After starting a foundation for critically ill children, once meeting Jesica Santillan, a teen in need of a heart and lung transplant, Mack built and sold a house, donating the profits from the sale to families of critically ill-children.
Even after the death of the foundation's namesake Jesica Santillan, when she received a heart and lung transplant of a different blood type from Duke Hospital which killed her, Mack is more convicted than ever to save as many children as he can.

This is the second Jesica's House built.

This is a man that battled the machine known as Duke Hospital, forcing Duke to admit their deadly error and bringing world-wide attention to medical malpractice, when medical malpractice reforms are one of the hottest topics in the political arena. The proposed caps would only provide $250,000.00 to non-wage earners like teens, mothers, the elderly and housewives, from the insurance companies of doctors who damage or kill people.
Mack is not the kind of man who stops to smell the roses or even rest after fighting the Goliath known as Duke armed only with his voice and the truth. So, what does a man like Mack do? The only thing he knows how to do, keep going. He started construction on another Jesica's Hope Chest House, to continue what can only be called a ministry with a mission of helping critically ill children and their families.

This is the third Jesica's House

If we had more Macks, the world would be a far more compassionate place, where accountability and righteousness outweigh the financial bottom line of the medical profession. Humanity is priceless and so are the people who seek to protect it. For the lucky family that purchases a Jesica's House, they are acquiring part of a legacy that was Jesica Santillan, a legacy that will live on, so long as there are critically ill children who can't afford the cost of being sick.
These houses were constructed with “donated” materials provided by local building supply companies and assembled by the skilled hands of “volunteer” craftsmen and local sub-contractors. Together, with volunteers in the community who gave freely of their time and resources so children less fortunate than themselves will have a greater chance at life. These things combined, make these “a true labor of love”.
