In February of 2006, Shanekwa was diagnosed with colon cancer, this disease is very unusual in children and her prognosis is directly dependant upon surgical resection, which doctors feel is unlikely to achieve a complete cure. Therefore, if surgery doesn't remove all of the cancer, the doctors can only treat pain and other symptoms.
Her treatment protocol involves chemotherapy followed by chemoradiation and surgical resection. The surgery required to obtain cure will be extensive, potentially leaving a significant physical defect requiring multiple reconstructive operations.
This is a life changing ordeal for this little girl and her family. If things go well, they will be dealing with it for many years to come.
